Vela

A girl with a lantern that holds a star. She visits places that only exist in the dark.

Who is Vela?

Vela is a girl with a lantern. Inside her lantern is a star. Vela visits places that only exist in the dark. Each place keeps its own hours, the way a shop does, and you can only get there at the right time of night. In Vela's world, time is the door.

Why does Vela keep her light low?

Vela’s lantern must always be kept low. Too much light would destroy the places she visits.

So Vela holds her star gently. She never lets it shine too bright. That is why you will always find her in half-light, with the dark all around her and a small, warm glow in her hand.

What is Vela like?

Vela is curious, careful, and brave in small ways.

She does not talk very much. But she notices everything.

Where does her name come from?

Look up on a clear night in the southern sky and you might find **Vela**, a real constellation. A long time ago, stargazers saw a giant ship in the stars called *Argo Navis*. Later, they split that ship into smaller constellations. Vela is one of them. Its name means "the sails."

In Spanish and Portuguese, vela means “sail,” and it also means “candle.” A girl named after a ship’s sails, who carries a little light? We think the name fits her perfectly.

Try this tonight

Can you find the smallest light in your room? A night light, a clock, a crack under the door. Vela says every little light is the start of a story. Tell someone what you found.

Mysteries

Some things about Vela are still a mystery, even to us:

  • How old is Vela?
  • Where does she sleep during the day?
  • Who taught her about the lantern?

Maybe the stories will tell us one day.
